My thoughts on Wool and the Gang crochet kits

I recently received a Wool and the Gang crochet kit for review. Here are my thoughts about it.

Contest closed; the winner (as chosen via random.org) is Colleen Close! I’ll send you an email for your prize!

I got to choose which kit I wanted to try, which is neat because these espadrilles had been making eyes at me =) I let Clara, my super nice contact at Wool and the Gang, choose the colour for me.

I was excited to see this beautiful pink when I opened the package!

About the kit:

When you purchase the espadrille kit, you choose the colour (of course), but also the sole size. (Yes, my feet are huge. Thanks for noticing.) You can also opt in or out for the hook. The branded hook I received with my kit was nice and sturdy, which is good, because working with Mixtape takes some hands =) especially if you’re using a 5mm hook! Don’t forget to swatch, though, as sized items really do require it!

About the yarn:

Mixtape was a totally new experience for me. I felt a bit foolish for thinking it felt a bit like working with an especially soft shoelace, but as that is its description on the Wool and the Gang website, I suppose it’s ok!

Similar to shoelace, the Mixtape’s unique knitted structure makes it the perfect yarn for anything from homeware to knitwear.

Mixtape is made of recycled t-shirt scraps, and is shaped like a flat tube – or a shoelace. Per Wool and the Gang, it’s a jumbo weight yarn.

About the instructions:

This pattern was rated beginner. The instructions were clear, and easy to follow. I mean, I had my entire pair of shoes completed within an afternoon, so… Easy peasy. Because you’re meant to crochet jumbo yarn with a relatively small hook, this is a bit hard on the hands. The sewing, too, needs to be tight. That said, the result is a really pretty summer shoe.

Also note that I made espadrilles, but you can make sandals too – the instructions offer two versions for this kit =)

I found the instructions to be complete & super clear.

Bonus: there will be some leftover yarn. Wool and the Gang thought of this too: they suggest a second project to make with your leftovers!

About the completed product:

Uhm, love?

The tighter you crochet these, the better (respecting gauge, of course). My second shoe is a better fit than the 1st, so I’m probably going to frog & redo shoe 1.

I know I’ll wear these through the summer – I am quite happy with these shoes.

Overall, the experience was good from start to finish: excellent customer service, beautiful packaging, product exactly as expected, easy to follow instructions.

Onto the even funner stuff… for you! A CONTEST!
