STAR STICH
Round 1 (RS): 1st star: Ch 3, pick up a loop in 2nd ch from hook, pick up a loop in 3rd ch from hook, pick up a loop in base of ch 3, pick up a loop in next 2 sts, yo and pull through all 6 loops on hook, ch 1 (eye created). Subsequent stars: (Pick up a loop in the eye of the previous star, pick up a loop through the last spike of the previous star, pick up a loop at the base of the previous star, pick up a loop in next 2 sts, yo and pull through all 6 loops on hook, ch 1) around. SSSJ to close round. Turn.

Round 2 (WS): Ch 2 (counts as hdc), 2 hdc in ea eye around, sl st to 1st hdc to close round. Turn.

Instructions

With A, ch 101, sl st to 1st ch to form ring.

Round 1 (RS): Ch 1, sc in ea ch around, sl st to 1st sc to close round. (101 sts)
(alternatively, make 101 foundation sts to start the cowl, which will make it more elastic at the top)

Now working perpendicularly:
Row 2: Ch 7, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in ea ch across, sl st at base of ch sts, sl st into next sc. Turn. (6 sc)

Row 3: (Do not ch 1), sc blo in next 5 sts, sc in last. Turn.

Row 4: Ch 1, sc in 1st sc, sc blo in next 5 sts, sl st in next 2 unworked sts. Turn.

Rows 5-101: Repeat rows 3-4, repeat row 3 once more. Remove yarn from hook. With yarn needle, sew row 2 to row 101. Finish off.

Back to rounds:
Round 102 (WS): Rejoin at row 2. Ch 1, sc in ea row end around, sl st to 1st sc to close round. Turn. (101 sts)

Rounds 103-104: Star stitch rounds 1-2 (50 stars after row 1, 101 hdc after row 2)

While working last stitch, change to B. Repeat rounds & rows 1-104 with B. Repeat with colours C, D, E, F.

Last round: Ch 1, sc in ea hdc around, sl st to 1st sc. Finish off.

Option for open cowl

If you would like your cowl to be open, work colours E & F as follows:

Row 1 (RS): as Round 1, above, but do not join. (101 sts)

Rows 2-101: as above, but do not sew row 2 to row 101; instead, finish off.

Row 102 (WS): with wrong side facing, rejoin yarn. As round 102, but do not join; instead, finish off.

Rows 103-104: with right side facing, rejoin yarn. Star stitch rows 1-2.

FINISHING, open cowl only

With right side facing, join yarn at top of opening. Matching colour to the colour you are working into, sc in ea row end of st around opening. Finish off.
